The first rogaine in Japan was held on September 15, 2002.
In my club, there is a man who was working in United States for several years and he rogained several times there. Based on his experience, we held the first event in 2002. Because the map was not so large, it was a 3 hour rogaine.
Team Shirakaba Orienteering Club of Nagano held the event using the orienteering map of 1/15,000. 210 rogainers participated. The venue was Sugadaira, about 30km east from Nagano where the Winter Olympics Games was held in 1998. Altitude is located between 1200m and 2200m above sea level.
We are going to hold a 6-hour rogaine in the Sugadaira again on May 11, 2003. Now, we have received entries about 200 rogainers. It will be held using 1/25,000 of the topographical maps of the Japan Geographical Survey Institute.
Many Japanese rogainers will be interested in international rogaining. Japanese rogainers will take part in a World Rogaining Championships soon.
