An
Independent Rogaining Association
NZOF position
A
meeting of the Rogaining committee of NZOF on 13th October
2001 discussed policies and principles which would best advance Rogaining
in NZ. A number of recommendations were made to NZOF council, proposing
in essence a greater independence of the Rogaining structure within NZOF,
to be labelled RogaineNZ.
The NZOF
Council at its meeting on 9th November 2001 accepted some of
these proposals but rejected the most significant ones.
In particular,
NZOF council did not grant a financial independence to Rogaining, and
they insisted that championship events would be open to NZOF members only,
and must also be organised by an affiliated club.
The need
for an alternative
The
majority of participants in Rogaines now come from outside Orienteering.
Many of these people come from tramping or multisport backgrounds, and
may not be particularly interested in orienteering as such. Most do not
join orienteering clubs and are therefore not readily available to become
involved in organisation; nor would they be eligible to participate in
championship events.
We (the founding
members) believe that a new organisation focussed entirely on Rogaining
may better serve the development of Rogaining in NZ. Our desire is to
work as closely as possible with the Orienteering community because of
the obvious similarities of interest, but to maintain an independence
which will hopefully attract new membership to both sports.
The New
Zealand Rogaining Association
We
are establishing the New Zealand Rogaining Association as an incorporated
society. Based on low cost and electronic communication, the Association
will maintain an email contact list of members, will organise rogaines,
will operate a website for the dissemination of information, will encourage
the organisation of rogaines by private individuals as well as other clubs
by operating an equipment pool, an insurance cover, and dissemination
of event information to members.
The rules
of the Association are open for discussion, and we welcome your comments.
The Rules are based on the requirements of Incorporated Societies. A very
low fee structure is proposed. (nil).
