The IRF is now an incorporated association registered in the State of Victoria, Australia.
Benefits of incorporation include:
- the ability to hold property in the corporate name without appointing trustees
- the ability to enter contracts in the corporate name
- the liabilities of an incorporated association are not enforceable against the committee members personally.
Incorporation gives the IRF greater legal standing, offers protection to office bearers, and brings with it greater responsibilities. The responsibilities that go with incorporation include reporting changes to our aims, providing audited reports each year, holding an annual general meeting, and having a constitution that is available to IRF members. In general, the IRF inc. has exceeded these requirements significantly, for example, by making the constitution and reports much more widely available than is specified by law.
Brazil rogaining mentor scheme
The IRF has a policy of linking new rogaining groups to an experienced rogainer who can develop a relationship with that group and provide assistance and support. Ragnar Paz is running the first rogaine in Brazil, has been corresponding with the IRF and has received copies of Costigan’s Organizing a Rogaine Manual, and Rogaining – Cross-country navigation. Julian Ledger has accepted the IRF’s invitation to act as a mentor to Brazilian rogainers. Julian is particularly well placed to take this role as one of the very senior and respected rogaining administrators in Australia, a top class competitor, a regular part of rogaine organizing teams, and a core member of the New South Wales Rogaining Association over many years. He also has experience internationally, played a role through early contacts with the Czech rogainers, and is fully aware of the range of facilities, services and assistance that the rogaining fraternity can offer to new rogaining groups. julianl@yhansw.org.au
IRF Partner Finding Service
The IRF is establishing a partner finding service for the forthcoming 5th World Rogaining Championships in the Czech Republic. This service is being co-ordinated by Penny Dufty. Penny is a top class rogainer, a long-term member of WARA and with considerable rogaining experience throughout Australia and internationally. She also runs the partner finding service for WARA, and I am sure would be happy to advise other groups how this type of service can help their events. Email penny@cygnus.uwa.edu.au.
Rogaining in Sweden
Lars-Ĺke Svensk, who has been a representative for Sweden on the IRF since 1998, visited Australia recently and met with the IRF President and Secretary in Melbourne. He spoke of his period living in Melbourne in 1990 and exposure to rogaining then and at the 3rd WRC.
There are two centres of rogaining in Sweden, one around Stockholm in the country’s SE, the other around Gothenburg in the SW. So far all three rogaines at Stockholm have been 6 hour events in November attracting 150 participants each year, and three at Gothenburg in February attracting 50 participants. Issues affecting the Stockholm rogaines include forests being closed during June-July and a very busy orienteering programme during May. For future 24 hour rogaines there is ideal country in the mountains 5 hours drive from Stockholm from May through August. The best period would be late June – early July where it could be linked to promotional events of the local resorts.
