Rogaining in Latvia

Guntars Mankus is the new IRF Observer for Latvia. The Rules of Rogaining have recently been translated into Latvian, and the country was represented at the 6th World Rogaining Championships in Arizona (including 13th place overall), and the 24 hour rogaine in Estonia.

The 1st Latvian rogaine was held on 24-25 July, 100 km from Riga. This was a 12 hr event starting at 8pm with 173 participants from four different countries. EMIT electronic punching system was used. Results:
http://www.orient.lv/2004/lch_rogaining/rezultati2.htm. Four shorter rogaines were held around Riga during 2004.

The next Latvian rogaine is scheduled for July 23-24, 2005, and there will be several shorter rogaines throughout the year.

Feedback from 6WRC in Arizona USA

Rod Phillips

A major survey was held following the 6th World Rogaining Championships in Arizona asking competitors their opinions of the event.

I have had detailed feedback from over fifty percent of all teams at the 6WRC, a quite extraordinary result. The feedback is highly positive with some of the world's best adventure racers, orienteers and rogainers describing the rogaine as outstanding. Many of those giving feedback had nothing but praise and all the others were highly complimentary. Some common themes are worthy of note by all organizers.

Well done to Peg Davis, all the Arizona team, Gordon Birch and all the others who helped us make 6WRC a top class event.

The Questionnaire as sent to all competitors:

“Hi. You recently competed in the 6th World Rogaining Championships (WRC) held in Arizona. After each WRC, we seek feedback on the Championships and how they can be improved in the future.
In the IRF Strategic Plan, there are six criteria listed as essential for each World Rogaining Championships.

Question 1. How well did we meet those criteria? What were the good points and bad points of the event?
Question 2. If you felt there were problems, do you have any suggestions as to how we can avoid these problems next time.
Question 3. What changes would you make for next time?

Some common themes within the replies were:

  1. Fantastic Hash House atmosphere. Many said that they were ‘blown away’ by people looking after them at the hash house.
  2. Very accurate course. All respondents were complimentary of the course setting and the great variation in route choices.
  3. Navigation too easy. People asked for harder navigation but still said they do not want 'lucky' controls.
  4. Water stops must not run out of water.

The complete feedback is posted on the web via the IRF site. It is very worthwhile reading as the above summary does not do justice to the feedback.
